Perspectives on Refugee Health: Addressing Multifaceted Factors

Abstract

Refugees, forced to flee their home countries due to war, persecution, and violence, face significant health vulnerabilities arising from physical trauma, mental trauma, and limited access to medical care. Healthcare providers play a critical role in addressing the complex medical needs of this population upon their arrival in the United States, however systemic barriers, including language and cultural barriers as well as inadequate provider training often hinder effective treatment. This paper explores the multifaceted factors that influence refugee health, emphasizing the need for healthcare providers and systems to adapt to the unique lived experience of their displaced patients. Drawing from firsthand experience as a refugee healthcare intern at World Relief, a resettlement agency in Chicago, IL, this paper highlights the impact of cultural norms, religious practices, and historical trauma on healthcare engagement. It examines strategies such as culturally sensitive provider training, trauma-informed care, and community-based support initiatives to bridge healthcare gaps. Furthermore, it underscores the economic and ethical imperative of investing in refugee health, demonstrating that equitable access to care benefits both refugees and host communities. Ultimately, this paper aims to advocate for a holistic, culturally competent approach towards refugee healthcare, ensuring that this vulnerable community receives the quality care they need and deserve to rebuild their lives in a new country.
