The central theme of the Vanderbilt Undergraduate Research Journal  is that undergraduate students are integral to its ultimate success as the official undergraduate research publication of Vanderbilt University. While the Journal  draws on faculty expertise for policy decisions, the Editorial Review Board is composed entirely of students and interested members of the University community.

The Vanderbilt Undergraduate Research Journal is the joint publication title of two sections, Humanities and Social Sciences and Engineering and Natural Sciences. The Editor is the chief executive officer of the Journal and coordinates the overall submission process. Both disciplinary sections are led by an Associate Editor, who solicits blind reviews from members of the Editorial Review Board and maintains general direction over each section. Additionally, the Editor directs the Research Notes section, which features collaborative faculty-student articles on major projects.
